3. Bio-knowledge marine area
Sant Feliu de Guíxols has important marine resources such as Cala Ametller, punta de Garbí and Cala Vigatà that are a paradise for scuba divers because of its ecologic richness. These places are included in the Bio-knowledge Marine Area in which we are working to combine a protected area and the tourism.
This project deals with two coastal marine areas that are included in the XarxaNatura 2000 Marina in order to promote and develop the seabed. They are managed by the Town Council by means of Custòdia Marina agreements and an active participation of the whole society.
The main purpose of this project is counteracting the severe deterioration of the marine ecosystems and accomplishing the European Directives and the Country Laws on preserving the marine biodiversity. Moreover, it is made up for the lack of investment and marine preservation policies in order to preserve this natural heritage that has a great value, as well as biological and touristic richness.
The sea environment is one of the main economic drivers of the town, the zone and the country.
First of all, this proposal is aiming to obtain the concession of Maritime and Terrestrial Public Domain Area of the two zones on Sant Feliu de Guíxols shore.
Secondly, the direct involvement of the civil society, the firms, the universities and other organisations will be obtained on the organisation and management of the BMA. It will be needed an active, permanent and social awareness of the project. Finally, a programme on educational activities is carried out to know better the ecological, cultural, scientific and scenic values of the BMA that are needed to get the bio-knowledge (term used over the last years by the scientists). This is a good way to promote the active and permanent preservation of these coastal marine areas within society.
Bio-Knowledge Marine Area is divided in 2 areas: Cala Vigatà and Cala Ametller.

With the aim of publicizing the seabed and raising awareness of its richness, the Sustainability, Natural Environment and Health Area has published two underwater guides: one for the beach of Sant Feliu and another for the beach of Sant Pol. The guides are complemented with a QR code that makes it easier for us to list nautical activities companies and naturalist entities, thus offering a more complete experience where the landscape and its natural resources are valued.
Guides can be purchased at the Tourist Office shop.
Thus, a wide range of underwater activities may be organised on the beaches and coves to discover Sant Feliu de Guíxols diving zones in a different way. Here are the details of all these activities...
